The Cost Of Being A Follower Of Christ

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33

As Christians, we are both disciples of Jesus and children of God. You cannot be a child of God if you are not a disciple of Jesus Christ, for it is only through Jesus Christ that we will all come to know the Heavenly Father. We know that the moment we say “Yes” to Jesus, our lives will forever be changed. Everything in our past is buried, and we are raised to a new life together with Christ.

As easy as that sounds, we are still not free from hardship and suffering. In fact, some of us even go through our worst situations starting the moment we decide to follow Jesus. Everything has a cost, which means that there will be sacrifices along the way as we choose to serve the LORD. Jesus said, in Luke 14:33, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” This means that as we walk with God, we cannot continue to hold on to the things that matter to our hearts above the Father. When we have something greater than God in our hearts, we will find ourselves distracted, double-minded (James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.), and often stumbling in our walk of faith. For instance, if Jesus Christ has called you into missions, you cannot move forward with Him when you worry about your family that will be left behind for the time being. Another example would be if God has called you to speak the Truth, but you have a people-pleasing heart—you most probably won’t be able to tell the whole Truth because of fear of rejection.

Being a disciple of Jesus has a cost, and often, the cost is to simply let go of our own pride, worries, and fears in exchange for trusting and relying on the Father at all times. It definitely sounds easy, but it’s hard to do. That is why the Holy Spirit is here—He is your Comforter. He will provide consolation for you during your most uncomfortable season.

So, if you find yourself looking back and wanting to give up being a follower of Christ, simply know that Your Heavenly Father already knows all your needs before you even ask Him. Give all your cares and worries to Him and entrust to Him everything that matters to you. He won’t fail you, and you can definitely trust Him.
