How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit

The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 5:18, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit…” To fill yourself with something is rooted from a desire of that thing; to desire to be drunk with wine will result to drunkenness; therefore, to desire the Holy Spirit is to be filled of the Holy Spirit.

If you wanted to be filled with the Holy Spirit you have to first desire the Holy Spirit. Acknowledge the Holy Spirit as the Third Person of the Godhead. He is a Person that you can fellowship with and experience. As what the Apostle Paul mentioned in 1 Corinthians 14:1 with regards to spiritual gifts, you have to “eagerly desire” it. Therefore, if you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit you must eagerly desire Him.

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:5-6).

Also, studying the Word of God and meditating upon it is one of the ways you the Holy Spirit can fill you with the things of God. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” (2 Timothy 3:16). It keeps your mind free from fleshly and sinful things and aligns your mind to the things of God:

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:5-6).

You have to immerse yourself in God’s Word daily so that the Holy Spirit can work in and through your life powerfully.

Moreover, you also have to be consistent in giving the Holy Spirit your time for prayer and communication. Your relationship with God has to be intentional in order for you to be filled of God. Spending your time more in prayer and even sacrificing some of your free time to God will surely move the heart of God and bring unimaginable favor in your life.

Take Hannah, the first wife of Elkanah who had no children (see 1 Samuel 1). The second wife, Peninnah, had children; and according to the Scripture, she never let Hannah forget that God had not given her children (1 Samuel 1:3-7). Instead of spending her time fighting in flesh with Peninnah, Hannah chose to spend her time in the sanctuary of God, pouring out her heart to God in tears and prayers. Soon enough, before the year ended, she finally conceived a child which she dedicated to God.

Hannah’s consistency in her prayer time with God had allowed heaven to move on her behalf, for God’s ears is always open to those who seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness. Therefore, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, you have to also be consistent and intentional in giving God your time.

Desire the Holy Spirit, study the Word of God daily and be consistent in your time and prayer with God. Surely you will be filled and always be filled of the Holy Spirit.
