How to Overcome Sin

Sin is and will always come by our lives here on earth as long as we are alive, for the Apostle John says in 1 John 1:8, “ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” But understand that we have been made perfect because of Jesus but we are all not holy instantly for our holiness is made in progress (see Hebrews 10:14). And your desire to overcome sin is actually a desire that has been planted by God in your heart. And He wants to help you overcome it.

1 John 1:8, “ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

King David said in Psalms 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Knowing and keeping the Word of God in your heart is the antidote to sin. As you come to know the Word of God daily, studying His character, His likes and dislikes, the Holy Spirit in you will guide you, convict you and help you walk the path of righteousness as you apply the Word of God in your life.

Moreover, if your goal is to overcome sin only, you might fail in doing so but if your goal is to get deeper in your relationship with God, then you will surely overcome sin and avoid sinning at all cost because of your personal relationship with the LORD. When you focus your eyes on the LORD instead of your sins, most likely you will avoid to sin because your mind is stayed on Him.  King David was known to be a man after God’s heart (see 1 Samuel 13:14) and when he wrote Psalms 119:11, the desire not to sin was out of his deep love and relationship with God, not to simply overcome sin.

In my walk of faith, I have observed that the more I look at my personal weaknesses and put every effort not to sin, the more I actually fail to do so because to simply put it, there will always be moments where you will fail GOD.

But when I fix my eyes upon Jesus whom by faith declared us righteous before God because of what He has done (see Romans 5), His righteousness in me becomes empowered and sin is no longer a matter of the heart.

You cannot overcome sin by yourself and make you at peace with God. It is only through Jesus Christ that you are made right with God. And through continues yielding to the Holy Spirit and submission in the Word of God, you can avoid and overcome temptations that you may not sin.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
I come before Your presence to receive Your love, mercy, grace and kindness. You know all things in my life and the sins I desire to overcome. By myself, I cannot do it. But through Your Son, Jesus Christ and the help of the Holy Spirit I believe I will surpass this season of my life. Open my heart Lord to Your teachings and increase my sensitivity to the voice and conviction of the Holy Spirit. Guide me and help me as I read and study Your Word. Most of all, I desire to have deeper and closer relationship with You. I want to know You more Father. I also ask that You bring the right people in my life who will lead me closer to You. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
