What Does Jesus Say About Fear?

Fear can clutch our hearts in an iron grip, its cold fingers prying away the serenity and joy meant to flourish there. Fear is a fact of life when navigating the unpredictable waves and meandering paths of our faith journey. We’ve all experienced moments when encompassing shadows of fear loom over us, eclipsing the light.

As followers of Christ, when whispers of worry crescendo into deafening roars of anxiety, we yearn for direction from our shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Throughout the years, I’ve walked shoulder to shoulder with fellow believers across life’s lowest valleys and the highest mountaintops. Through these experiences and deep study of Scripture, I’ve been privileged to see how God stills life’s tempests with His words alone.

Be not afraid. This directive may be brief, but its frequency throughout Scripture underscores its importance—God clearly wants us to pay attention. We can cling to this command like a lifeline thrown out into the choppy seas of uncertainty.

Bible Verses About Fear

As believers, we understand that Jesus can help us handle fear. Now, let’s dive into some specific Bible verses about fear that can bring us peace and courage.

• The promise from Isaiah 41:10 The beginning of strife is like letting out water,     so quit before the quarrel breaks out. (ESV) reminds us that God is always with us: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

  

• We find comfort in Psalm 23:4, which says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” This verse assures us that, no matter how scary life gets, God walks beside us.

  

• In Joshua 1:9, we find these powerful words: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” This shows that God wants us to be brave because He’s on our side.
• Jesus Himself gives us a reason not to worry in Matthew 6:34 (NIV) when He says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” This teaches us to live bravely, one day at a time.

  

• The Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV), “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” These words encourage us to give all our worries to God through prayer.
• In ( Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose.), we find hope: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Knowing this helps us see that even when times are tough, there’s a bigger plan at work.

  

• Finally, 2 Timothy 1:7  for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.(ESV) offers power against fear: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” This verse suggests that fear does not come from God. Instead, He provides strength and love.

We’ve seen how the Bible talks about fear. Now, let’s dig deeper into how to trust Jesus when we’re scared. Picture a dark night; alone and without light, you might feel isolated and afraid. But imagine having someone you trust right by your side, holding a bright light—that’s what Jesus does for us. He said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”). This means he can shine through our darkest fears.

Trusting in Jesus helps us face our worries head-on. Think of David—though he faced big challenges, he knew God was with him, so he feared no evil (Psalm 23:1-4).

We’re all like sheep, too, sometimes getting lost or scared. But just as a good shepherd looks after his flock, we can count on Jesus to guide and comfort us through difficult situations. That’s why it’s important to lean on Him and remember His love every day—especially when we’re most afraid.
