Obedience Is As Simple As God’s Will Be Done

And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Matthew 26:39

Jesus Christ is our perfect model and example for living a life of obedience to God. We know the hardship, suffering, and pain Jesus Christ went through. He willingly chose to obey the Father and become the great sacrifice, shedding His blood and ultimately dying on the cross so that we may be forgiven, redeemed, and saved through it. “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8).

No one can compare to or match Jesus Christ. He’s done it all, and there’s nothing we can do to outdo what Jesus already did. The only part we need to do now is continue what Jesus Christ has begun in the hearts of men, the work of redeeming sons and daughters back to the Father as ambassadors of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.).

So how do we follow Christ’s obedience? In what way can we obey God like Jesus did?
Matthew 26:39 gives us a clear illustration of what obedience looks like: “And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

This was Jesus’ prayer on the most difficult night of his life. This happened on the same night he was going to be betrayed by a follower, disciple, and friend named Judas Iscariot, who handed him over to the Jewish soldiers and religious leaders.

This prayer is one of the most powerful prayers a Christian will ever say before God—it means you will surrender your free will unto the Father. Many times, we are faced with the temptation to rely on our own understanding and strength at the most difficult times of our lives. Some Christians miss out on God’s best breakthroughs because they seek their own will by their own strength and understanding instead of surrendering and trusting in God as Jesus did.

The life of Jesus Christ teaches us that when we obey the Father by surrendering unto Him, we can be assured that nothing will go wrong. Jesus never regretted surrendering to the Father even if it caused Him His very own life because in the end, God gave Him the highest position in heaven and the joy of seeing many sons and daughters redeemed to the Father’s presence through His blood.

You will never go wrong by entrusting difficult situations to the hands of the Father. Do not make rush decision based on your own understanding without communicating and praying to God first. Like Jesus, you must first say, “Your will be done” before you tell Him your decisions over the matters of your life. It is best that you first surrender unto the Father’s will and let it unfold as you simply trust and rely on Him. Obedience doesn’t mean always having to do something. It can be as simple as surrendering even if you don’t understand.
