How to Repent Before God

Repentance is not a method list to do or a one-time act. It is part of our lifestyle as believers and followers of Christ, continually being washed and renewed by the Word of God and through obedience to the Holy Spirit. To repent means to change your mindset – from a worldly mindset to godly mindset (aligned to the Bible) and to make a firm decision to take this path resulting into visible transformation in one’s life.

“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4).

Moreover, repentance is not you knowing your sins and making decisions to change them for apart from Christ, you can do nothing. A powerful kind of repentance that is lasting and life changing is when you come to know the goodness of God in your life despite sinning: “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4).

The best example of repentance was evident in the life of Zacchaeus:

When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:5-10).

Notice that Jesus called Zacchaeus by his name despite knowing what his sins are. That is the love of God for us. He doesn’t call us by our sins or the wrong doings we have made. Instead, God calls us by who we are – his son, his daughter – and gives us the chance to change not because we have found out our sins but that we realized the goodness and kindness of God leading us to change from our old sinful ways.

Here are 3 more ways that could guide you in repentance before the Lord:

  1. Continuously reading the Word of God.

God’s Word is God’s will. Therefore, it is always important to seek and study His Word that you may gain knowledge about the things of God, His principles and ways that will guide you in your Christian life.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

  1. Daily communication with God.

Communication is a major aspect in a relationship. The strength and depth of any relationship is built upon communication. The more you communicate and express yourself to God and in return listen to His voice, the more you grow closer and become fond of Him.

  1. Obedience to His voice.

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22)
