What Does God Reveal To Us About Jesus Being A Carpenter?

Have you ever wondered why the Son of God, Jesus Christ, was predestined by the Father to be a carpenter and not a fisherman, doctor, or gardener instead? We know that nothing comes from God by accident, for every plan of His comes with good intent and a magnificent purpose. Jesus Christ’s being a carpenter surely reveals to us something about our Father, for Christ Jesus is a visible image, the exact representation of our invisible God ( Colossians 1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.).

First, let’s learn some facts about carpenters. We know that a carpenter creates and repairs furniture and uses his hands and creativity to build and repair items. He also carves, builds foundations and structures for houses, and paints walls and surfaces. A carpenter is also used to and trained to carry heavy weights of materials, as well as to stand for long hours as they work.

Based on what a carpenter in real life does, we can identify four points of a carpenter that reveal to us the attributes of God:

1. Jesus as a carpenter reveals to us the very attributes of God as the Creator of Man. Out of all the creations He made on the earth, it was man that God formed from dust, using His hand. God formed man beautifully and wonderfully in His image and likeness. We are God’s specialty and masterpiece (Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man[a] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.).

2. Jesus as a carpenter reveals to us that God can fix and rebuild anything that needs to be repaired in our lives. Just as you call a carpenter to fix whatever furniture has been broken, God surely is able to restore any damage in our lives. When God sent His Son Jesus, He restored us to His loving arms by the blood of His Son (Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.).

3. Jesus as a carpenter shows that God wants us to have a strong foundation built on Christ Jesus. We are a temple of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ mentioned that those who hear the Word of God and obey it are the ones whose foundation is so strong no storm can destroy it.

4. And, of course, based on many Bible scholars, Jesus was predestined to be a carpenter because of God’s design for his destiny and ultimate goal on earth, which had to do with a cross made of heavy wood that Jesus must carry for long hours until the redemption of man is accomplished.
