Faith is one of those words that you have to feel rather than define. The dictionary definition says that faith is a belief in something that you can’t see or prove. Synonyms are belief, confidence, conviction and trust. From a religious perspective, faith is considered to be a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual perception rather than proof.

The list of giants of faith found in Hebrews 11 is like a roll call of the faithful throughout history. The chapter also provides a biblical definition of what faith is. Belief in something that cannot be proved is the essence of faith. If the proof exists, it no longer requires faith. The examples of Joseph, Abraham, Moses and Jacob are all examples of reliance upon God’s promises even when they seemed impossible to fulfill.

To incorporate that type of assurance in our own lives requires faith that God can be believed and trusted to do what He says he will. God has promised to give to each of us a measure of faith. It is up to us to exercise that faith in order to expand our assurance that God will supply the answers as he has promised.
