There are many Bible verses about patience. The characteristic is sometimes called long-suffering when it refers to God’s patience with us. The personality trait is one of the “Fruits of the Spirit” and is given as a gift from God to believers. Many Bible stories praise directly or indirectly the ability to be patient and wait for the Lord to act. Job is a good example of a patient man. Although Abraham was blessed by God with the son of promise, it took years of waiting and an incident or two where he ran ahead of God to try to force a human solution on Him.
The Bible uses the word meaning “endurance” interchangeably with “patients”. Patience is not a quick one-shot reaction. It’s easy to be patient when everything is going exactly as we want it to. When things are not going so well, it is the true test of patience. Being in the midst of irritations and trials is not a license to become impatient. Instead it is an opportunity to develop the characteristics that are what God wants of us.
Patience used in this sense is not passive or gentle. It is a word that shows activity and robustness in the actions and approach to life. Running a race with “patience” might be better translated as moving through the course of the race with “endurance”. Patience doesn’t happen in a blink of an eye. It is necessary to tap into a recognition of God’s power and endurance to achieve true development of patience.
