The former nun known as Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia and died September 5, 1997 in Kolkata India. Her parents were devout Catholics and active within the local church. Agnes attended parochial primary school and public secondary school. At the age of twelve she felt the first stirrings of a calling for a religious life. She took her first vows in Darjeeling India in 1931.

In Calcutta, she was part of the staff of a girl’s school where she taught and was principal until 1948, when she was granted permission to leave the convent. She spent the balance of her adult life laboring as a missionary among the poor and ill in Calcutta.

She was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity which was responsible for opening 610 foundations in 123 countries. The members of the Missionaries of Charity at the time of her death in 1997 numbered more than 4000. In addition there were thousands more who served as lay volunteers. They operate schools, medical clinics, a nursing home, an orphanage, and even a leper colony, She received many awards during her lifetime, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
